Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to the High Tatras
Meeting in Krakow/Poprad, arrival to the High Tatras – Stary Smokovec village.
The journey from Krakow takes aprox. 3 hrs.

Day 2: Ski touring in the central part of the High Tatras - Velka studena valley
The High Tatras are the highest range in the Carpathians. The imposing wall of granite peaks rises from the Poprad basin to a height of 2655 meters. These snowy mountains, as they were called in the middle ages, with their monumental size and inaccessibility, have earned great respect. They have given rise to beautiful legends, such as those about highwaymen, about gold miners seeking wealth in the inaccessible mountains, and the unhappy Countess Beate who died for her love of the Snowy Mountains. The most beautiful legends are told about the icy alpine lakes, which decorate almost every valley in the Tatras. The valley of Velka Studena dolina is well liked for ski touring in the Tatras. This territory enables easy tours or demanding routes with extreme downhill skiing.

This tour starts at Hrebienok (1.285 m), a ground cable car from Smokovec brings us to this small ski resort. The next ascent leads to the mountain chalet Zbojnicka chata (1.960 m). It takes 2,5 hrs. to get there and the route is moderate challenging. A wavy terrain behind the chalet is not difficult to pass, the aim is the saddle Maly Zavrat (2.220 m) and only this last ascent is quite steep. After reaching the highest point the descent can start, we ski through a terrain called General and the Gate, along the ascent path to Stary Smokovec.

Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Robber mountain hut (Zbojnicka chata, 1.960 m) – Maly Zavrat pass (2.220 m) – Hrebienok (1.285 m)
▲1.000 m, ▼1.000 m, aprox. 5 hrs.

Day 3: Ski touring in the central part of the High Tatras - Mala Studena valley

The ground cable car from Smokovec brings us again to Hrebienok. We move on and follow the red marked path called Magistrala. At the mountain chalet Zamkovskeho chata (1.475 m) we leave the Magistrala and turn left. It follows a short ascent through the forest, later on above the timberline through the valley Mala Studena dolina. After 1 hour we stand below a high rock terrace, called Velky hang (the huge hillside). We have to take a steep path to the top of this terrace. The chalet Teryho chata (2.015 m) is positioned on the top. According to the weather we can go even further, to the hill called Pfinnova kopa (2.121 m) and to the saddle Sedielko (2.372 m). The descent to Stary Smokovec follows the same path.

Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Teryho mountain hut (Teryho chata, 2.015 m) – Sedielko pass (2.372 m) – Hrebienok (1.285 m)
▲1.200 m, ▼1.200 m, aprox. 6 hrs.

Day 4: Ski touring in the western part of the High Tatras – Mengusovska valley
8 km long Mengusovská valley is one of the biggest and most beautiful valleys on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. Northern end of the valley is created by the peaks of the main ridge, which creates also the border between Slovakia and Poland. The starting point for ski tours is Popradske pleso (mountain lake).

From Popradske pleso the ski tour starts by easy terrain. We head to the significant side ridge, which is dividing the valley into two parts. Short gully takes us to the smaller valley under the main ridge. We continue on steep slopes up to Voli hreben (Ox ridge 2.360 m). In front of us open up the sharp cliffs of Polish Tatras and the big mountain lakes covered by ice. Behind us is Mengusovska valley.
The skiing starts in steep terrain. Later continues into open moderate terrain. Short gully gets us back to the main valley. Under the gully we get through moderate terrain to the bottom of the valley and through the forest back to the start point – Popradske pleso mountain lake. Cup of coffee or glass of beer in the hotel on the bank of the lake will be a reward after a good day.

Popradske pleso tram stop (1.250 m), Popradske pleso (1.500 m) – Ox ridge (Voli hreben, 2.360 m) – Popradske pleso tram stop (1.250 m)
▲1.150 m, ▼1.150 m, aprox. 6 hrs.

Day 5: Easy day - Slovak Paradise (Slovensky raj)
This is an easier day after three days of ski touring. The limestone dolomite plateau of Slovak Paradise was cut by mountain rivers into several sections, which are separated by narrow ravines. Some of them are only passable by iron or wooden horizontal and vertical ladders. The mountain streams and waterfalls create the fairytale ice filling in winter time.
Our destination today is Sucha Bela ravine. In approximately 3hrs we will climb along Bowl waterfalls, Little Window Waterfall, Flume Waterfall, Side Waterfall and Cascade waterfall. Return is on easy forest trail.

Podlesok camp (545 m), Sucha Bela (955 m) – Podlesok (545 m)
▲465 m, ▼465 m, aprox. 5 hrs.

Day 6: Ski touring in the eastern part of the High Tatras – Baranie pass
This ski tour has two alternatives. Both starts in Mala Studena dolina (like Day 3). From Teryho chata mountain hut cross the frozen lake we start to climb the slope under Baranie pass. In the upper part we continue along a wide steep gully up to the Baranie sedlo (Ram pass 2.380 m). According to the snow conditions, we can decide wheatear to ski the same valley back or do the second alternative – Big Frozen valley (Velka Zmrzla dolina).
Skiing down the Big Frozen valley to Green lake (Zelene pleso) is more challenging. There are two steep gullies. First right from the pass and the second over the Green lake. After refreshment at the mountain hut by Green lake follows long and easy downhill to the White Water (Biela Voda).
According to the conditions the whole tour can be done backwards.

Alternative I: Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Teryho mountain hut (Teryho chata, 2.015 m) – Baranie pass (Baranie sedlo, 2.380 m) – Hrebienok (1.285 m)
▲1.200 m, ▼1.200 m, aprox. 6 hrs.

Alternative II: Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Teryho mountain hut (Teryho chata, 2.015 m) – Baranie pass (Baranie sedlo, 2.380 m) – Green lake (Zelene pleso, 1550 m) – Kezmarska Biela voda (910 m)
▲1.200 m, ▼1.470 m, aprox. 7 hrs.

Day 7: Highest peak of Poland - Rysy
Begin in the Mengusovska valley, climb over a rocky terrace secured by fixed ropes, along the highest located mountain hut (2.250 m) up to Rysy (2.501 m)
Today we get back to Popradske pleso mountain lake. We will ascend the eastern part of Mengusovska valley. Mixed moderate and steeper terrain will bring us to the Froggy lake (Zabie pleso). Over here one rocky terrace is to be climbed with the help of the fixed ropes. Continues moderate ascend along the mountain hut under Rysy, Vaha pass up to the southern ridge of Rysy peak. After short walk without skies we reach Rysy peak. The reward is a great view on the both sides of the High Tatras (Polish and Slovak one).
