Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to the High Tatras

Meeting in Krakow/Poprad, arrival to the High Tatras – Stary Smokovec village.
The journey from Krakow takes aprox. 3 hrs.

Day 2: Ski touring in the Low Tatras
First day we start below the southern slopes of the Low Tatras in the valley Trangoska (1.122 m). After 2 hrs. ascent we reach the mountain hut of General Stefanik (1.728 m). By the way, directly under the surface of this valley is a huge system of caves, and one part of them is opened to the public - it is the cave of Dead bats. Leaving the chalet behind we follow the main ridge and reach the highest peak of the Low Tatras - Dumbier (2.043 m). After admiring the splendour of nature we descent over Krupova hola to the saddle Demanovske sedlo 1.756 m. Another easy ascent leads us to the second highest peak of these mountains Chopok (2.023 m). This peak is a part of a favorite ski resort and there are many ski slopes on the northern side and the southern side of Chopok. Just below the peak the mountain hut Kamenna chata is positioned, there is also a weather forecast station next to the top of this peak. It is a long descent to the valley Krupova dolina. The last short ascent to the parking place at hotel Srdiecko (1.216 m) and the ski tour is over.

Day 3: Ski touring in the High Tatras – central part – Velka Studena valley
The High Tatras are the highest range in the Carpathians. The imposing wall of granite peaks rises from the Poprad basin to a height of 2655 meters. These snowy mountains, as they were called in the middle ages, with their monumental size and inaccessibility, have earned great respect. They have given rise to beautiful legends, such as those about highwaymen, about gold miners seeking wealth in the inaccessible mountains, and the unhappy Countess Beate who died for her love of the Snowy Mountains. The most beautiful legends are told about the icy alpine lakes, which decorate almost every valley in the Tatras. The valley of Velka Studena dolina is well liked for ski touring in the Tatras. This territory enables easy tours or demanding routes with extreme downhill skiing.

This tour starts at Hrebienok (1.285 m), a ground cable car from Smokovec brings us to this small ski resort. The next ascent leads to the mountain chalet Zbojnicka chata (1.960 m). It takes 2,5 hrs. to get there and the route is moderate challenging. A wavy terrain behind the chalet is not difficult to pass, the aim is the saddle Maly Zavrat (2.220 m) and only this last ascent is quite steep. After reaching the highest point the descent can start, we ski through a terrain called General and the Gate, along the ascent path to Stary Smokovec.

Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Robber mountain hut (Zbojnicka chata, 1.960 m) – Maly Zavrat pass (2.220 m) – Hrebienok (1.285 m)

Day 4: Ski touring in the High Tatras – central part – Mala Studena valley
The ground cable car from Smokovec brings us again to Hrebienok. We move on and follow the red marked path called Magistrala. At the mountain chalet Zamkovskeho chata (1.475 m) we leave the Magistrala and turn left. It follows a short ascent through the forest, later on above the timberline through the valley Mala Studena dolina. After 1 hour we stand below a high rock terrace, called Velky hang (the huge hillside). We have to take a steep path to the top of this terrace. The chalet Teryho chata (2.015 m) is positioned on the top. According to the weather we can go even further, to the hill called Pfinnova kopa (2.121 m) and to the saddle Sedielko (2.372 m). The descent to Stary Smokovec follows the same path.

Hrebienok (1.285 m) – Teryho mountain hut (Teryho chata, 2.015 m) – Sedielko pass (2.372 m) – Hrebienok (1.285 m)
▲1.200 m, ▼1.200 m, aprox. 6 hrs.

Day 5: Easy day - Slovak Paradise
This is an easier day after three days of ski touring. The limestone dolomite plateau of Slovak Paradise was cut by mountain rivers into several sections, which are separated by narrow ravines. Some of them are only passable by iron or wooden horizontal and vertical ladders. The mountain streams and waterfalls create the fairytale ice filling in winter time.
Our destination today is Sucha Bela ravine. In approximately 3hrs we will climb along Bowl waterfalls, Little Window Waterfall, Flume Waterfall, Side Waterfall and Cascade waterfall. Return is on easy forest trail.

Podlesok camp (545 m), Sucha Bela (955 m) – Podlesok (545 m)
▲465 m, ▼465 m, aprox. 5 hrs.

Day 6: Ski touring in the Western Tatras
Ski touring in Ziarska valley and peak Placlive (2.126 m)
Zapadne Tatry (the West Tatra) is the second largest mountain in the Carpathian mountain chain. It is positioned to the west of the High Tatras. The differences between these two mountains are both in the structure and the altitude. The West Tatra is lower and the elevation of the highest peaks is 2000m. The Žiarska dolina valley is very famous and very popular among the ski touring lovers in Slovakia. This valley is so appealing because of the variety of routes that can be set up here.

Today’s tour starts at the altitude of 920 m with a moderate ascent to the mountain chalet Žiarska chata (1.350 m). This is a perfect opportunity to brace us because the next ascent is more challenging. We reach the saddle Žiarske sedlo (1.917 m). The next part follows the ridge with the peak Placlivô (2.124 m) at the end. This last ascent is short but steep. The descent on the skis brings us back to the mountain chalet and to the point where the tour started.

Ziarska dolina (900 m) – Ziarska chata (1.350 m) – Ziarske sedlo (1.917 m) – Placlivo (2.126 m) – Ziarska dolina (900 m)

Day 7: Highest peak of Poland - Rysy
Begin in the Mengusovska valley, climb over a rocky terrace secured by fixed ropes, along the highest located mountain hut (2.250 m) up to Rysy (2.501 m)
Today we get back to Popradske pleso mountain lake. We will ascend the eastern part of Mengusovska valley. Mixed moderate and steeper terrain will bring us to the Froggy lake (Zabie pleso). Over here one rocky terrace is to be climbed with the help of the fixed ropes. Continues moderate ascend along the mountain hut under Rysy, Vaha pass up to the southern ridge of Rysy peak. After short walk without skies we reach Rysy peak. The reward is a great view on the both sides of the High Tatras (Polish and Slovak one).
Follows long skiing down the same way back.

Popradske pleso tram stop (1.250 m), Popradske pleso (1.500 m) – Mountain hut under Rysy (Chata pod Rysmi, 2.250 m) – Vaha pass (Sedlo Vahy, 2.337 m) – Rysy (2.501 m) - Popradske pleso tram stop (1.250 m)
