Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to the High Tatras
Meeting in Krakow (or Poprad), arrival to the Tatras through the picturesque Polish highlands – “Podhale”

Day 2: Between the High Tatras and White Tatras
Hiking to the pass of Kopske sedlo (1.725 m), wild forests and green meadows of the White Tatras, glacial lakes and rocky peaks of the High Tatras

The Belianske Tatras are part of the High Tatras range and are made up of a connecting limestone ridge. Scenic and expressively carved peaks reaching heights of over 2100 meters form the western part of this ridge. The eastern part is slightly undulating. These mountains are characterised by alpine meadows and clearings covered from spring to fall with bright carpets of flowers.

Our first hiking tour starts in the village of Tatranska Javorina (1.000 m), a typical Tatra settlement founded in the 19th century. A unique wooden church and a hunting hut of count Hohenlohe decorate the surrounding. The first part is an ascent through the wild forests of the valley Zadne Medodoly to the mountain pass Kopske sedlo (1.750 m). We have a unique opportunity to see the most beautiful peaks and the longest valleys of the mountains. We descent through a valley which actually devides the Tatra mountains into the limestone part behind us and the granite part in front of us. Finally we reach the hut at the Green mountain lake – Zelene pleso (1.551 m) - a pretty location in this charming valley. The last part of the descent leads through the scenic valley of Kezmarska Biela voda.

Tatranska Javorina (1.000 m) - Kopske sedlo (1.750 m) - Zelene pleso (1.551 m)- Kezmarska Biela voda (910 m)
6,5 hours of hiking, highest point 1.750 m, elevation gain 800 m, elevation decrease 890 m

Day 3: Mountain hut Zbojnicka chata – one of the prettiest tours in the High Tatras
The wide valley Velka Studena dolina and the ascent of the mountain hut Zbojnicka chata (1.960 m)

The High Tatras are of glacial origin and have a total area of 800 km2. In contrast to the hard-edged qualities of the mountain massifs are the picturesque lakes. It is interesting that almost each valley in the Tatras is decorated with one or more lakes. In total there are about 120 alpine lakes, called "pleso". The symbols of the High Tatras are the chamois and the edelweiss flower.

We start in the oldest settlement of the High Tatras, in Stary Smokovec. A funicular railway is a very pleasant way how to reach the altitude of 1.285 m. The first part of the tour follows the red trail called Magistrala. This path connects all the southern valleys of the High Tatras. After 20 minutes, we reach a big map of the territory. Here we leave the red trail and get on the blue one, which starts behind the map. After half an hour we step out of the woods and the view of the large valley surprises us. We follow the creek, and after 45 minutes we get to a bridge. A short rest is welcomed, because from now on we ascend a zig-zag path which leads to the mountain hut. It was renewed after a fire damage in 1999. After having some refreshment and before going back, it is good to go little bit further into the valley. Several lakes are hidden behind the big rocks, and they are inviting you to spend some time there. There is a chance to see some chamois in the area, as well.
We hike down the valley on the same path and reach the station of the funicular railway again.

Hrebienok (1.285 m) - mountain hut Zbojnicka chata (1.960 m) - Hrebienok (1.285 m)
5 hours of hiking, highest point 1.960 m, elevation gain 815 m, elevation decrease 815 m.

Day 4: The highest peak of Poland – Rysy
Ascent of Mt. Rysy (2.499 m) – great view of both sides of Tatras (Polish and Slovak one)

The High Tatras are the highest massif in the Carpathian Range. This granite mass spreads out from east to west and among its southern spurs one can find 25 peaks higher than 2.500 meters. Some of the peaks are accessible by marked trails and others are only accessible with a mountain guide.

On the last day of this hiking tour we start on a comfortable road to Popradske pleso mountain lake (1.500 m). In the wide opened Mengusovska valley begins the switchback trail to Zabie plesa (1.919 m) – Froggy lakes. Above the lakes the trail leads over the steep rocky terrace secured by chains. Leaving this challenging section behind, we approach the highest located mountain hut in the High Tatras – Chata pod Rysmi (2.250 m). The final part to Rysy peak takes about one hour. Standing on the top of the peak Rysy (2.499 m), you have Slovakia and Poland at your feet. The descent to Popradske pleso copies the same route. Cup of coffee or glass of beer on the bank of the lake is a reward after this great day.

Popradske Pleso, tram stop (1.250 m) – lake Popradske Pleso (1.500 m) – mountain hut Chata pod Rysmi (2.250 m) – Rysy peak (2.499 m) - Popradske Pleso, tram stop (1.250 m)
8 hours of hiking, highest point 2.499 m, elevation gain 1.249 m, elevation decrease 1.249 m.

Day 5: Departure for Krakow/Poprad
After breakfast departure for Krakow/Poprad, scenic drive along the mountains
